Bread Spotting

Across the Arab World, and into parts of Eurasia such as Turkey, bags of bread are hung next to, rather than inside, rubbish bins. Crumbs and scraps are left atop walls for the birds and cats to eat. A trail of stale loaves will always lead you through the city. When a piece of bread hits the ground, it’s picked up, pressed to the forehead, and kissed.

In the Egyptian dialect, bread and life are the same word - عيش (aish). ‘The word is pregnant with meaning. It’s the basic component of life.’ ~ Mohammed Sayyid.

This project is a celebration of the places we find bread, where we find these little reminders of life.
